According to the definition of 2020, Metropolitan France comprises 2,409 urban agglomerations (unités urbaine). This means an increase by 180 compared with the demarcation of 2010. Paris is (with unchanged boundaries) the largest agglomeration with 10,816,526 inhabitants in 2018.

The update to 2020 boundaries has only small impacts: Four mergers of communes happened and Torcy arrondissement absorbed five communes of Meaux and Provins arrondissement. The merger of Troarn and Sannerville to Saline commune was revoked.

According to the 2019 definition, the communes Montévrain (Seine-et-Marne department) and Saint-Pierre-du-Perray (in Essonne department) are newly divided by IRIS statistical areas.

The update to 2019 boundaries affected 626 communes that were rearranged to 239 communes. The resulting communes have between 81 (Douaumont-Vaux) and 67,967 inhabitants (Évry-Courcouronnes). Some arrondissements were also affected.
