The number of divisions is reduced from 119 to 42 by the municipal reform that comes into effect on 1 July 2021. Vangaži town moves to Ropažu novads. Aglonas novads is split: the eastern parishes move to Krāslavas novads and Aglona parish moves to Preiļu novads.

According to the 2020 population estimates, the total population of Latvia has fallen to 1.91 million, which means a decrease of 7.85% compared to the 2011 census. Only few towns in the surroundings of Riga show a population growth.

The Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia has published experimental statistics estimating the population of villages. »City Population« tabulates the 2018 estimates of all villages with at least 20 inhabitants in addition to the 2000 and 2010 census population.
