Within the last decade, the resident population of Bulgaria fell by about 450 thousand people (= 6.1%) to a population of 6.92 million at the end of 2020.
According to the end-of-2019 estimates, 56.7% of the Bulgarian population lives in 40 cities and towns with at least 20,000 inhabitants. 28% of the population lives in 675 places with 1,000 to 20,000 inhabitants.
The total population of Bulgaria has fallen to 7 million according to the end-of-2018 population estimates. Only major cities like Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna show an increase compared to the results of the 2011 census.
