According to the register-based 2020 census, South Korea has 8.704 million inhabitants under the age of 20. This number is only 61.5% and 51.8% of the people between the ages of 20 and under 40 and of 40 and under 60, respectively.

Two rural townships are promoted to towns: Toegyewon (퇴계원읍) with a end-of-2019 population of 30,362 and Deoksan (덕산읍) with 20,911 inhabitants.

Since 2015, South Korea performs a register-based census. Nevertheless, its results are not consistent with the population figures from the resident registration that are higher by about 3.5% on average.
